For off-road motorcycle riders, sufficient brightness is crucial, as it helps them achieve better visibility when riding at night through rugged terrains like mountains and forests. In some cases, they may even encounter foggy or rainy weather, which severely limits visibility. Most factory motorcycle lights are dim halogen bulbs, and some off-road motorcycles don't even come with headlights from the factory. Therefore, improving DR's lights is necessary to enhance visibility and safety during night rides.
There are two main ways to improve motorcycle lighting:
-
Replace the dim halogen bulbs with high-quality LED bulbs, the most commonly used are H4 and H7.
-
If replacing the halogen bulbs with LED bulbs is not bright enough, you can also add a set of LED auxiliary lights, installed on the front fork, above or below the headlight, handlebar, or on the crash bar.
We will primarily analyze the second method of motorcycle lighting improvement: What type of lights are suitable for motorcycle lighting? We should consider the following four factors.
Installation Locations and Sizes of The Light
A pair of 2" to 4" pod lights is ideal. These lights are compact enough to avoid taking up excessive space or looking bulky while still offering ample illumination when mounted on the crash bar.
Located near the wheel, the front fork is a great spot for lights, as it provides the rider with enhanced visibility. There is enough space to mount 2-4" pod lights or a 6-10" mini light bar.
Some off-road motorcycles may not come with headlights from the factory. In such cases, a 2-4" pod light combined with a 5" / 6" mini light bar can be used, but this setup requires a specific bracket for installation.
Power Consumption
The more lights you add, the more current they will consume. To slow down the drain on the motorcycle's battery while ensuring sufficient brightness, it is best to install lights with a total power between 20W and 60W.
Beam Pattern
The ideal beam pattern for motorcycle riding are driving light or spot light, and flood light.
Driving lights or spot lights are suitable for high-speed riding or situations where long-distance illumination is needed. They help riders spot obstacles far ahead while riding at high speeds.
Flood lights provide a wider coverage of the area in front, helping the rider see obstacles ahead and on the sides, making them ideal for low-speed riding.
Durability and Protection
LED auxiliary lights for motorcycles are often exposed to dirt, rain, and other harsh environments. Motorcycle lights must be waterproof and durable. It's best to choose lights with a waterproof rating of IP67 or higher. The housing should be made of aluminum alloy; never choose motorcycle lights with plastic housings, as they are of the lowest quality and purchasing them is essentially wasting money.
